Residential Energy Code Update

The Energy Efficient Building Act requires most new residential buildings throughout Illinois to meet the minimum standards of the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The new requirement will take effect early 2010. In a conversation with Lisa Mattingly of the Illinois Capital Development Board, the CDB is currently in the process of writing the administrative rules, which includes a period for public comment prior to the effective date.

To comply with the 2009 IECC, a home will be required to be more energy efficient than currently required in most municipalities. Some typical insulation upgrades include foundation insulation and continuous rigid insulation over exterior studs.

SWA Architects has been providing upgraded insulation packages for many of the homes we design, meeting or exceeding these new requirements. We have long understood the value of upgrading the thermal envelope to provide our clients with energy savings and comfort. The reduction of air infiltration is a critical component in the insulation of a home, in fact we also recommend blower door testing to confirm the air sealing has been effectively performed.

For those involved in commercial construction, the 2009 IECC was adopted on August 18, 2009 for commercial buildings throughout the state, and is already in effect.
